The Full Moon Cruising Group began its season with a great outing to New Bern and back. Seven boats made the trip and a few “orphans” joined us for dinner as well.
As usual, the winds were on the bow for our trip upriver, so everyone opted for their “Iron Genny” and made good time! By the time Salty arrived, Diogenes, Encore and Hot Chocolate were already docked. Soon, Spotted Dog and Escape came in, and Carolina Girl rounded up the fleet. (The Hines earned kudos for actually sailing, as befitting our leaders for the weekend!) After helping each other tie up to the outside bulkhead, and learning the difference between new and old adapters, the group headed to the Cow Café for soul-restoring ice cream, trading stories as we slurped and licked our treats.
The group then spent the afternoon wandering around downtown, in and out of shops and generally con- tributing to New Bern’s commerce. Five o’clock saw the group wrapped around the dock power box, enjoying that time-honored Blackbeard tradition: Happy Hour! Then it was time for dinner, Captain Ratty’s here we come! A moonlight stroll took us back to our boats, where everyone had no trouble sleeping all night…. Well, except for the Howards… but that is for them to tell!
Morning saw the group gathered one last time at Baker’s Square for breakfast and then it was time to head home. The wind? You guessed it…on the nose! But once we all got down the river, the wind clocked around enough so that we could all enjoy tacking practice back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… well, you get the idea!
Many, many thanks to all our participants: John/Beth Hiner on Carolina Girl, Andy/Sally Johnson on En- core, Bill/Sandy Drechsler on Hot Chocolate, Dave/Tami Howard on Spotted Dog, Dieter/Claire Trautman on Escape, Chesley Sugg & Bruce Woods on Diogenes, and Jim/Joni Floyd on Salty. Our “orphans?” Jimmy Sellers and Jeff Tsai were hardily welcomed!
