Valentine’s Day– February 10, 2018
No dancing – No smooching in the hallway – No clandestine hugs on the backstairs – No lipstick on collars! This was a Valentine’s celebration of a very different kind! The 2nd Annual BSC Valentine’s Day Auction and Social proved to be just as much fun as the first!
Guests brought a hors d’oeuvre and something for the auctioneer to “sell”, receiving “$200” to purchase slightly used items. There were four quizzes enabling guests to win extra “money”: Love Stories in Literature, Romantic Movies, Customs Around the World and Popular Valentine Gifts! The last quiz was to guess the titles of 20 love songs, as our guest Tim (from Hertford), played just a few notes! Gay Whitney came in first at 19!
In the background, the LOTC crew was busy with a Mexican taco buffet. There were homemade choices of beef, chicken, and pork, with all the fixin’s and cupcakes for dessert.
Then big John V began the auction! Tim won a pair of glitzy undies, which he immediately put on his head; a young (underage) girl modeled a “no hands” wine glass; and one lucky man bought New Bern’s largest Valentine’s card. There were three oil paintings of sailing vessels, a mole trap with a mouse in it, chocolate covered cherries, a beautiful Blackbeard Pillow, a lock box with fun items inside, a one-cup frothy coffee maker and even some actual necessary items like toilet paper! And a teenage boy wound up with a HUGE chandelier that he mistakenly bid on! Says he is going to hang it in his room.
Like magic….when the last item was auctioned off, everyone pitched in to clean up the clubhouse in record time.
Thanks to the Crew: Leah Abell, Polly Brown, Kathy Gormley and Karen Meyer……who put this evening together…the quizzes, pre-planning, shopping, prepping, cooking, decorating and final orchestration were appreciated by all!
